From Check-In to Completion
How It Works at Canyon Urgent Care
We make the clearance process as simple and efficient as possible so you can get back to class. Here’s what to expect:
Step 1: Walk In or Call Ahead
No appointment needed. Stop by during open hours between classes, before your shift, or on weekends. If you want to call ahead to check wait times or confirm availability of specific services, we’re happy to help.
Step 2: Bring Your Paperwork
Hand your COC clearance checklist to our front desk when you check in. We’ll review what’s needed and map out everything you need during this visit and any follow-up visits (such as TB reading appointments).
Step 3: Physical Exam and Testing
Your provider will complete your physical exam, review your immunization records, and order any required lab work or testing. TB skin test placement, QuantiFERON blood draws, and lab titers can all be done during the same visit.
Step 4: Lab Results and Follow-Up
Lab titer results typically take 3-5 business days and are sent directly to you. If you had a TB skin test, return in 48-72 hours for your reading. QuantiFERON results are typically available within 24-48 hours.
Step 5: Get Cleared
Once all results are in, your provider will complete your clearance paperwork and walk you through any next steps. Most students complete their entire clearance in one or two visits.
Planning ahead makes everything easier. If your clinicals start in a few weeks, come in now rather than waiting until the last minute. Lab titer results can take 3-5 business days, and if you need any catch-up immunizations, you may need additional time before your immunity is confirmed. We’ll help you map out a timeline so you’re cleared and ready before your first clinical day.
What to Bring to Your COC Physical Visit
Not sure what you need or what records you have? Don’t let that stop you from coming in. Bring whatever you have and we’ll figure out the rest together. We can often access previous lab results or coordinate with your previous provider to fill in any gaps. Give us a call if you have questions before your visit.
Important for Nursing Students to Know
Which TB Test Do You Need?
TB testing is a required part of nursing school clearance, and the right test depends on your personal health history. Here’s how to know which option is right for you:
1. TB Skin Test (PPD/Mantoux) – $50 complete (placement and reading)
The standard TB screening method. A small injection is placed under the skin of your forearm on your first visit, and you return 48-72 hours later for reading. Most nursing programs accept this test. Two visits required.
Best for: Students with no history of BCG vaccination and no previous positive TB skin test results.
2. TB Blood Test (QuantiFERON) – $60
A single blood draw sent to a lab for analysis. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours and only one visit is required. Not affected by BCG vaccination, making it more accurate for students born outside the United States.
Best for: Students who received the BCG vaccine as a child, students with a history of positive TB skin test results, or students who prefer a single-visit option.
If you were born outside the United States, there is a good chance you received the BCG vaccine as an infant or child. BCG vaccination is standard in many countries and can cause a false positive result on a TB skin test. If this applies to you, the QuantiFERON blood test is the more accurate and appropriate option. Let us know your vaccination history when you check in and we’ll recommend the right test for you.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions for COC Nursing Students
What does COC Nursing Program require for clinical clearance?
The College of the Canyons nursing program requires a physical exam, TB test, proof of required immunizations, and lab titers confirming immunity to certain diseases including MMR, Varicella, and Hepatitis B. Specific requirements may vary by program and clinical site. Bring your COC clearance checklist and we’ll walk through every item with you.
How much does the complete COC nursing clearance cost?
The cost depends on which services you need. The physical exam is $50, the TB skin test is $50 (or $60 for the QuantiFERON blood test), and lab titers are $25-$50 each. Most students completing a full clearance for the first time spend between $150 and $250 total depending on how many titers are needed and whether any catch-up immunizations are required. We’ll confirm all costs before drawing any labs or administering any vaccines.
How long does the clearance process take?
Your initial visit typically takes 45-60 minutes and includes your physical exam, TB testing, and lab draws. Lab titer results take 3-5 business days to return. If you had a TB skin test, you’ll need to return in 48-72 hours for your reading. Most students complete their full clearance within one to two weeks from their first visit.
Do you offer the QuantiFERON blood test instead of the TB skin test?
Yes. We offer the QuantiFERON TB blood test for $60. This is a single blood draw with results available in 24-48 hours. It’s particularly recommended for students who received the BCG vaccine or have a history of positive TB skin test results. If you’re not sure which test you need, let us know your vaccination history and we’ll help you decide.
I had a positive TB skin test in the past. What do I need for nursing school?
If you’ve had a previous positive TB skin test, you should not get another skin test. Instead, you’ll need the QuantiFERON blood test ($60) for future TB screening. You’ll also likely need documentation of previous treatment or a recent chest X-ray to confirm you don’t have active TB. Bring any documentation of your previous positive test and we’ll help you figure out what your program requires.
What lab titers do nursing students typically need?
Most nursing programs require titers (blood tests confirming immunity) for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella (chickenpox), and Hepatitis B. Some programs also require Hepatitis A titers. We’ll draw all required titers during one visit and send results directly to you when they’re ready. If any titers come back negative, you may need a booster vaccine and repeat titer, which we can also help coordinate.
Can I get my physical and all my testing done in one visit?
Yes. Your physical exam, TB skin test or QuantiFERON blood draw, and all required lab titers can be completed during one visit. If you choose the TB skin test, you’ll need to return in 48-72 hours for the reading. Everything else is done in one stop.
Do you accept insurance for nursing student clearance services?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans including Medi-Cal and many student health plans. Some services like lab titers may be covered depending on your plan. Many students find our self-pay rates competitive, especially since there’s no office visit charge on top of the physical exam fee. We’re happy to check your benefits before we start.
I'm starting clinicals soon. How far in advance should I come in?
Come in as early as possible, ideally 3-4 weeks before your clinical start date. Lab titer results take 3-5 business days, and if you need any catch-up immunizations, your program may require a waiting period before they accept proof of immunity. The earlier you start, the more time you have to address any gaps without delaying your clinicals.
What if my titer results show I'm not immune to something?
If a titer comes back negative (meaning you’re not immune), you’ll need a booster vaccine and possibly a repeat titer after a waiting period. We can administer many common vaccines in-clinic and help coordinate any that we don’t carry. We’ll walk you through next steps clearly and help you get back on track as quickly as possible.
Do you complete COC paperwork on-site?
Yes. Bring your COC clearance forms and we’ll complete them during your visit. We’re familiar with the standard forms used by College of the Canyons nursing and healthcare programs and will make sure everything is filled out correctly.
