Why TB Testing Is Often Required
When and Why to Get a TB Test in Santa Clarita
A TB test is a simple way to check if you’ve ever been exposed to tuberculosis, a serious lung infection that requires medical evaluation. While rare in everyday settings, TB is still screened for in jobs and places where people are in close contact. You may need a TB test if you are:
Starting a new job in healthcare, childcare, or public service
Enrolling in school, college, or a credential program
Applying for immigration, visa, or travel clearance
Working in shared living environments like shelters, group living centers, or jails
Completing a routine health screening required by an employer or provider
Attending College of the Canyons nursing or healthcare programs
Working at Henry Mayo Hospital or local medical facilities
Teaching or working in Santa Clarita Valley schools
Applying for green card, K-1 visa, or adjustment of status
Starting employment with LA County or government agencies
TB tests are valid for 12 months in most cases, though some employers or programs may require more frequent testing. The TB skin test (PPD) requires two visits: one for placement and one for reading 48 to 72 hours later. You must return to the same clinic for your reading. Don’t wait until the last minute before your start date.

How It Works From Start To Finish
What to Expect at Your TB Test
Getting tested is simple and only takes a few minutes. Here’s how the two-visit process works:
Step 1: Test Placement
We place a small amount of fluid just under the skin on your forearm. This causes a small bump and takes less than 2 minutes. The injection may sting briefly but is generally well-tolerated.
Step 2: Wait Period
Go about your normal activities for 48 to 72 hours. Don’t scratch the area or apply lotions. You can shower normally but avoid soaking the area.
Step 3: Follow-Up Reading
Return to Canyon Urgent Care 48 to 72 hours later (not before, not after). A provider will examine the injection site, measure any reaction, and determine your result.
Step 4: Results and Documentation
You’ll get your results and official documentation immediately. If positive, we’ll explain what this means and provide guidance on next steps.
The entire process from placement to documentation takes about 10 minutes total across two visits. If your test is positive, it doesn’t mean you’re sick. It simply means you’ve been exposed to TB bacteria at some point in the past. Our provider will walk you through any next steps or referrals you may need.

Understanding Your Testing Options
TB Testing Options: Skin Test, Blood Test, or Chest X-Ray
There are three main types of tuberculosis testing and screening. We’ll help you determine which one is right for your situation based on your history and requirements.
1. TB Skin Test (PPD/Mantoux) – $50
The traditional tuberculosis screening method. Small injection under the skin, return in 48-72 hours for reading. Most common and widely accepted. May not be accurate for people who received BCG vaccine. Requires two visits.
2. TB Blood Test (QuantiFERON) – $60
Blood draw sent to lab for analysis. Results in 24-48 hours. Only requires one visit. Preferred for people with previous BCG vaccination or history of positive skin tests. Not affected by prior BCG vaccine.
3. TB Chest X-Ray – $80
Chest X-ray to check for active or previous TB infection. Required for people with positive TB skin or blood test results. Also used for annual TB screening when previous positive test prevents future skin testing. Same-day results.
Most employers, schools, and immigration applications start with either the TB skin test or blood test. If you have a positive result on either test, you’ll likely need a chest X-ray to confirm you don’t have active TB disease. We can complete X-rays on-site the same day. If you’ve had a positive TB test in the past, you should NOT get another skin test – instead, you’ll need annual chest X-rays for TB screening.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About TB Testing
What is a TB test and how does it work?
A TB test (tuberculin skin test or PPD) checks if you’ve been exposed to tuberculosis bacteria. We inject a small amount of tuberculin (a purified protein derivative) under the skin of your forearm. If you’ve been exposed to TB, your immune system will react and create a raised, hard bump at the injection site. The size of this bump after 48 to 72 hours tells us whether you’ve been exposed. A negative result means no significant reaction. A positive result means your immune system has encountered TB bacteria before, though it doesn’t necessarily mean you have active TB disease.
How long does a TB test take?
The actual injection takes less than 2 minutes. Your first visit (test placement) typically takes 10-15 minutes including check-in and paperwork. You’ll then go about your normal activities for 48 to 72 hours before returning. Your second visit (reading) takes about 5-10 minutes. Total time commitment across both visits is usually 20-25 minutes.
When exactly do I need to come back for my reading?
You must return between 48 and 72 hours after placement. Not before 48 hours (results won’t be accurate) and ideally not after 72 hours (the reaction may fade). For example, if you get your test placed on Monday at 2 PM, you can return anytime from Wednesday at 2 PM through Thursday at 2 PM. We’re open 7 days a week to make scheduling your return visit convenient.
What if I miss the 48 to 72 hour window?
If you can’t make it back within 72 hours, the test must be repeated. The reaction typically fades after 72 hours and can’t be accurately read. We’ll need to place a new test and you’ll need to return again in 48 to 72 hours. To avoid this, schedule your placement knowing you’ll be available for the reading window.
Can I get my reading done at a different urgent care?
No. You must return to the same clinic where you received your placement. Other providers don’t have documentation of your baseline measurement and can’t accurately read your result. Make sure you can return to Canyon Urgent Care for your reading before getting your test placed here.
What does a positive TB test mean?
A positive TB test means you’ve been exposed to TB bacteria at some point in your life. It does NOT mean you currently have active tuberculosis disease or that you’re contagious. Most people with positive tests have latent TB infection, which means the bacteria are in your body but inactive and not making you sick. You’ll likely need a chest X-ray and possibly treatment to prevent the infection from becoming active in the future.
I received the BCG vaccine as a child. Will this affect my TB test?
Yes. The BCG vaccine (given in many countries outside the US) can cause a positive reaction on a TB skin test even if you’ve never been exposed to actual TB bacteria. This is called a false positive. If you received BCG vaccine, we may recommend the TB blood test (QuantiFERON) instead, which is not affected by BCG vaccination and provides more accurate results.
Q8: I had a positive TB test in the past. What do I need for future TB screening?
If you’ve had a previous positive TB skin test or blood test, you should NOT get another skin test in the future as it can cause severe reactions. You also should not get another blood test, as it will remain positive due to your previous TB exposure.
Instead, you’ll need an annual TB chest X-ray for ongoing screening. The chest X-ray costs $80 with no office visit charge and results are available same-day. This is the standard approach for anyone with a history of positive TB testing.
Bring documentation of your previous positive test and any treatment you received (such as a course of antibiotics to treat latent TB infection).
How long is a TB test valid?
Most employers, schools, and programs consider TB tests valid for 12 months from the date of reading. Some high-risk settings like hospitals may require annual testing. Immigration applications typically require tests completed within 6 months to 1 year of submission. Check with your specific employer, school, or program for their requirements.
What should I do after getting my TB test placed?
Go about your normal activities. You can shower, exercise, and work normally. Don’t scratch, rub, or apply lotions or creams to the injection site. Avoid covering it with a bandage unless it’s bleeding (which is rare). Don’t expose the area to extreme temperatures or sunlight. If you notice severe redness, swelling, blistering, or pain, call us immediately.
Do you offer TB blood tests (QuantiFERON)?
Yes. We offer TB blood tests (QuantiFERON) for $60. This is a good option if you received the BCG vaccine, have had a previous positive skin test, or prefer a single-visit test. The blood test requires a simple blood draw, and results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. If you’re unsure which test you need, we can help you decide based on your situation.
Can I get a TB test if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes. TB skin testing is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The test does not harm the baby and is actually recommended if you have TB risk factors, since untreated TB during pregnancy is far more dangerous than the test itself. Let us know if you’re pregnant so we can document this appropriately.
What if I have a weakened immune system?
People with weakened immune systems (HIV, cancer treatment, immunosuppressive medications) may have false-negative TB skin tests because their immune system can’t mount a strong reaction. If this applies to you, let us know. You may need additional testing or a TB blood test for more accurate results. We’ll discuss the best approach based on your medical history.
Do you complete immigration forms for TB testing?
Yes. We complete TB test documentation for immigration purposes including green card applications, visa applications, and adjustment of status. Bring your specific forms and we’ll make sure everything is completed correctly. Note that some immigration applications require a complete civil surgeon examination beyond just TB testing. We can discuss whether TB testing alone meets your needs or if you need additional screening.
When do I need a TB chest X-ray?
You need a TB chest X-ray if you have a positive TB skin test or blood test result, if you’ve had a previous positive TB test and need annual screening, if you have symptoms of active TB (persistent cough, night sweats, weight loss), or if your employer or school requires a chest X-ray instead of or in addition to a skin or blood test. The X-ray costs $80 with no office visit charge.
