From Check-In to Relief, Here’s How It Works

Our team will examine your ear, identify what’s causing your pain or hearing loss, and create a treatment plan to help you feel better.

Step 1: Symptom Assessment

Tell us about your ear pain, when it started, and any other symptoms. We’ll ask about recent swimming, colds, or previous ear problems.

Step 2: Ear Examination

We’ll look inside your ear with an otoscope to check for infection, fluid, wax buildup, or eardrum problems.

Step 3: Diagnosis & Treatment

Based on what we find, we’ll diagnose the problem and recommend treatment such as ear drops, oral antibiotics, or wax removal.

Step 4: Relief & Prevention

We’ll give you instructions for using ear drops properly, managing pain at home, and preventing future ear infections.

Most visits take 20-30 minutes. You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s wrong and how to treat it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ear Infections in Adults

What causes ear infections in adults?

Adult ear infections can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) are often caused by water trapped in the ear canal after swimming or showering. Middle ear infections usually develop after a cold or sinus infection when fluid gets trapped behind the eardrum. Earwax buildup, allergies, and smoking can also increase your risk.

What's the difference between swimmer's ear and a middle ear infection?

Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear canal, usually caused by water exposure. It causes pain when you tug on your earlobe and may have drainage. Middle ear infections (otitis media) occur behind the eardrum and often follow colds. They cause deep ear pain, muffled hearing, and feeling of pressure or fullness. Treatment differs, so proper diagnosis matters.

Do ear infections always need antibiotics?

Not always. Many ear infections, especially viral ones, will improve on their own within a few days. We prescribe antibiotics when you have a bacterial infection, severe symptoms, drainage from the ear, or you’re at higher risk for complications. For mild cases, we may recommend pain management and monitoring before starting antibiotics.

How long does an ear infection last?

Most outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) improve within 7-10 days with treatment. Middle ear infections often feel better within 2-3 days of starting antibiotics, though fluid can remain behind the eardrum for weeks. If your symptoms don’t improve within 3 days of starting treatment, come back for reevaluation.

Can I swim with an ear infection?

If you have swimmer’s ear or a perforated eardrum, avoid swimming until your provider clears you. Swimming can worsen the infection or slow healing. If you have a middle ear infection without eardrum rupture, ask your provider. Generally, it’s best to stay out of the water until you’re healed.

What can I do at home for ear pain?

Apply a warm compress to the affected ear. Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Sleep with the affected ear elevated. Don’t insert anything into your ear canal (no cotton swabs, fingers, or home remedies). Use prescribed ear drops exactly as directed. Avoid getting water in your ear.

How do I prevent swimmer's ear?

Dry your ears thoroughly after swimming or showering. Tilt your head to drain water from each ear. Use a hair dryer on low setting held at arm’s length to dry ears. Consider using swimmer’s ear drops (alcohol and vinegar solution) after swimming. Don’t use cotton swabs, which can push wax deeper and damage ear canal.

When should I see an ENT specialist instead of urgent care?

Come to urgent care first for acute ear pain or infection. See an ENT specialist if you have chronic ear infections (more than 3-4 per year), hearing loss that doesn’t improve, persistent dizziness, suspected eardrum perforation, or if your symptoms don’t improve with treatment. We can provide a referral if needed.
