You can’t move the injured joint through its normal range of motion
The pain is severe or gets worse instead of better
You feel numbness or tingling in the injured area
The joint feels unstable or gives out when you use it
You’re still in significant pain after 48 hours of rest and ice

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Laceration Repair
What's the difference between a sprain and a strain?
A sprain is an injury to a ligament (the tissue connecting bones to each other), most commonly affecting ankles, wrists, and knees. A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon (the tissue connecting muscles to bones), often affecting the back, hamstring, or shoulder. Both can range from mild stretching to partial or complete tears.
How do I know if I have a sprain or a broken bone?
It can be difficult to tell without an X-ray. Both sprains and fractures cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the injured area. Generally, if you heard a “pop,” can’t put any weight on it, or the pain is severe, you should get an X-ray to rule out a fracture. We can do X-rays on-site and give you immediate results.
Should I use ice or heat on a sprain?
Use ice for the first 48-72 hours after injury. Ice reduces swelling and numbs pain. Apply ice for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. After 72 hours, you can switch to heat to relax tight muscles and improve blood flow. Never apply ice or heat directly to skin.
How long does it take for a sprain or strain to heal?
Healing time depends on severity. Mild sprains or strains (Grade 1) usually heal in 1-2 weeks. Moderate injuries (Grade 2) take 4-6 weeks. Severe sprains or strains (Grade 3) can take 8-12 weeks or longer. Following your treatment plan and avoiding re-injury are key to faster healing.
Do I need crutches for a sprained ankle?
It depends on the severity. If you can’t put weight on your ankle without significant pain, crutches can help you avoid further injury while healing. We have crutches available for $45 if you need them. Your provider will recommend whether you should stay off your feet completely or if partial weight-bearing is okay.
Can I still exercise with a sprain or strain?
You should avoid activities that stress the injured area until it’s healed. However, you can often do other types of exercise. For example, if you have a sprained ankle, you might be able to do upper body workouts or swimming. Ask your provider what’s safe during recovery.
When should I follow up after a sprain or strain?
If you’re healing as expected, you may not need a follow-up visit. However, come back if your pain gets worse instead of better, swelling increases, you develop new symptoms, or you’re not improving after 1-2 weeks. We’re here if you need us.
Will I need physical therapy?
Mild sprains and strains usually heal with rest and home exercises. Moderate to severe injuries often benefit from physical therapy to restore strength, flexibility, and prevent re-injury. Your provider will let you know if PT is recommended and can provide a referral.
