Severe sinus pressure or facial pain

Fever over 101°F that lasts more than 3 days

Frequently Asked Questions About Upper Respiratory Infections

Frequently Asked Questions About Upper Respiratory Infections

An upper respiratory infection (URI) affects your nose, throat, sinuses, and upper airways. This includes the common cold, sinus infections, pharyngitis (throat infection), and laryngitis. URIs are usually caused by viruses, though bacterial infections can develop as complications. Symptoms typically include cough, congestion, sore throat, runny nose, and sinus pressure.

How do I know if my respiratory infection is viral or bacterial?

Viral infections usually cause clear or white mucus, come on gradually, and improve within 7-10 days. Bacterial infections often cause thick yellow or green mucus, high fever, severe symptoms, or symptoms that get worse after initially improving. We can perform testing and examination to determine whether you have a bacterial infection that needs antibiotics.

Do I need antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection?

Most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses and don’t need antibiotics. Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections. We’ll only prescribe antibiotics if you have a confirmed bacterial infection like strep throat or bacterial sinusitis. Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them can lead to antibiotic resistance and won’t help you feel better faster.

How long does an upper respiratory infection last?

Most viral URIs last 7-10 days, though cough can linger for 2-3 weeks. If your symptoms last longer than 10 days, get significantly worse, or improve and then get worse again, you should come in for evaluation. These could be signs of a secondary bacterial infection.

What can I do at home to feel better?

Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated. Use a humidifier to keep airways moist. Gargle with warm salt water for sore throat. Take over-the-counter pain relievers for fever and body aches. Use saline nasal spray or rinses for congestion. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. Wash your hands frequently to prevent spreading infection.

When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care?

Go to the ER if you have severe shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or face, difficulty swallowing, or very high fever (over 103°F in adults) that won’t come down with medication. For most respiratory infections, urgent care is the right choice and you’ll be seen much faster.

Can I use telehealth for a respiratory infection?

Telehealth can work for follow-up visits or mild symptoms, but for initial diagnosis we usually recommend coming in so we can listen to your lungs, examine your throat, and do testing if needed. After your initial visit, telehealth is great for checking on your progress or adjusting treatment.

How can I prevent spreading my respiratory infection?

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing (use your elbow, not your hands). Stay home from work or school until fever-free for 24 hours. Avoid close contact with others. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces. Don’t share drinks, utensils, or personal items.
