What Happens During a Sports Physical?

Our sports physicals follow California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) standards and are accepted by all local schools and leagues. Here’s what we check:

Step 1: Medical History Review

We’ll review your child’s health history, past injuries, medications, and any conditions that might affect sports participation.

Step 2: Vital Signs and Measurements

We’ll check height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and vision screening to establish baseline health metrics.

Step 3: Physical Examination

We’ll examine the heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat to ensure your child is healthy and ready for physical activity.

Step 4: Musculoskeletal Assessment

We’ll check joint flexibility, strength, and range of motion, and evaluate any previous injuries or concerns about sports readiness.

Step 5: Forms Completed On-Site

We’ll check joint flexibility, strength, and range of motion, and evaluate any previous injuries or concerns about sports readiness.

Most sports physicals take 15-20 minutes from check-in to completion. If we find any concerns, we’ll discuss them with you and may refer you to a specialist if needed. Most students are cleared the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sports Physicals

How long does a sports physical take?

Most sports physicals take 15-20 minutes from check-in to completion. This includes the medical history review, physical examination, and form completion. If your child has a complex medical history or previous injuries that need discussion, it may take a bit longer. We don’t rush the exam just to move quickly. Plan for about 30 minutes total to be safe, but most families are in and out faster than that.

What's the difference between a sports physical and a regular checkup?

A sports physical is focused specifically on whether your child is healthy enough to participate in athletics. It includes checking the heart, lungs, joints, flexibility, and past injury history. An annual well-child exam with your pediatrician is more comprehensive and includes developmental screening, immunizations, and discussion of growth, behavior, and overall health. Sports physicals don’t replace annual checkups. Your child needs both.

Are sports physicals covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans don’t cover sports physicals as a separate visit because they’re considered elective for school or sports participation, not medical necessity. That’s why we offer them at our affordable self-pay rate—just $40 during April (regularly $50)—which is often less than your insurance copay would be anyway. You’re welcome to submit the receipt to your insurance for potential reimbursement, but we recommend just paying the $50 flat fee.

Do you fill out the actual school or league forms?

Yes. Bring your school, league, or camp physical form with you and we’ll complete it on-site. We’re familiar with California CIF forms, College of the Canyons athletic forms, Little League physicals, AYSO forms, and most other common sports physical paperwork. If you don’t have your form yet, we can use a standard California sports physical form that’s accepted by most organizations, or you can come back with your form and we’ll complete it retroactively at no charge.

What if my child has asthma, a previous injury, or other medical conditions?

Bring information about any medical conditions, medications, or previous injuries. Most athletes with well-controlled asthma, past injuries, or chronic conditions can still be cleared for sports with appropriate management. If we have concerns, we’ll discuss them with you and may recommend follow-up with a specialist or your pediatrician before clearing your child. Our goal is to keep kids active safely, not to unnecessarily disqualify them.

Can you clear my child if they had a concussion or serious injury?

Clearance after concussion or serious injury depends on the specifics of the injury, how long ago it occurred, and whether your child has been released by their treating physician. We can provide clearance if your child has fully recovered and has documentation from their doctor releasing them to return to play. If there are any concerns, we may require additional evaluation before clearance. Safety always comes first.

How long is a sports physical valid?

In California, sports physicals are typically valid for 12 months from the date of the exam. Some organizations require physicals to be done within a certain timeframe before the season starts (usually within the past year). Check your school or league requirements. Getting your physical done in the spring means it’s valid through the following spring, covering multiple sports seasons.

Can siblings get physicals at the same time?

Absolutely. Bring multiple kids and we’ll get everyone cleared. Each child gets their own thorough exam, but doing them together saves you multiple trips. This is especially helpful during the busy summer rush before fall sports. We can handle teams or groups too if you want to coordinate with other families.

What if you find something wrong during the physical?

If we identify any concerns during the exam (such as an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, vision problems, or joint issues), we’ll discuss them with you and recommend appropriate follow-up. Depending on the concern, we may clear your child with restrictions, defer clearance pending specialist evaluation, or recommend further testing. Most issues we find are minor and don’t prevent sports participation, but we take any red flags seriously.

    Do I need an appointment?

No appointment needed. We’re a walk-in urgent care open 7 days a week. You can walk in anytime during our hours. That said, if you’re bringing a large group or team, calling ahead is helpful so we can prepare. During peak times (late July, early August, and late January), mornings and early afternoons tend to be less busy than evenings.

What ages do you see for sports physicals?

We provide sports physicals for athletes of all ages, from elementary school through college and adult recreational leagues. Whether your child is 6 years old starting AYSO soccer or 18 years old playing college football at COC, we’ve got you covered. We also clear adult athletes for recreational leagues, city sports programs, and amateur competitions.

Can I get a sports physical and treatment for an injury at the same visit?

Yes. If your child needs a sports physical but also has a current injury, illness, or other medical concern, we can address both during the same visit. The sports physical is $50, and any additional treatment would be billed separately based on what’s needed. Just let us know at check-in so we can plan accordingly.
