Not Sure If You Need Care?
When Should You Come In for Laceration Repair?
Not every cut needs stitches, but waiting too long can lead to infection or scarring. Come see us if your wound has any of these signs:
The cut is deep, gaping, or you can see underlying tissue
Bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
The cut is longer than ½ inch
The wound is on your face, hand, joint, or genitals
The edges of the wound are jagged or won’t stay closed
You were cut by something dirty or rusty
The injury was caused by an animal or human bite
You haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last 5-10 years
Most lacerations should be closed within 6-8 hours for best healing results. Facial wounds should ideally be treated within 24 hours to minimize scarring. Don’t wait. Come in as soon as possible after your injury.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Laceration Repair
How do I know if my cut needs stitches?
You likely need stitches if your cut is deeper than ¼ inch, longer than ½ inch, has edges that gape open or won’t stay closed, is bleeding heavily after 10 minutes of pressure, or is located on your face, hand, joint, or other high-visibility or high-movement area. If you can see fat, muscle, or bone, come in immediately.
How long after a cut can you still get stitches?
Most wounds should be closed within 6-8 hours for optimal healing and to reduce infection risk. Facial lacerations can sometimes be closed up to 24 hours after injury because the face has excellent blood supply. Don’t wait. Come in as soon as possible after your injury.
What's the difference between dermabond, sutures, and staples?
Dermabond (skin glue) is a liquid adhesive applied to clean, straight cuts on low-tension skin. It costs $80 and dissolves on its own. Sutures (traditional stitches) use thread to close deeper wounds and cost $275. They need removal in 5-14 days. Staples are metal closures used for scalp or body lacerations, also $275, and require removal in 7-10 days. Your provider will recommend the best option based on your wound’s location, depth, and healing needs.
Does getting stitches hurt?
We use local anesthetic (numbing medicine) before closing your wound, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the actual suturing, stapling, or gluing process. You may feel a small pinch when we inject the numbing medication, and some pressure during closure, but most patients report minimal discomfort.
How much does laceration repair cost at Canyon Urgent Care?
All laceration repairs include an office visit fee of $109 (or $84 for new patients). Wound closure costs depend on the method used: Dermabond is $80, sutures are $275, and staples are $275. If you’re using insurance, your cost will depend on your plan’s coverage. We accept most major insurance plans.
Do I need a tetanus shot for a cut?
If your cut was caused by something dirty, rusty, or contaminated (like a nail, gardening tool, or animal bite), and you haven’t had a tetanus booster in the last 5 years, you should get one. For clean cuts, you need a tetanus booster if it’s been more than 10 years since your last shot. We can provide tetanus shots on-site if needed.
When do stitches or staples need to be removed?
Removal timing depends on the location of your wound. Face: 3-5 days. Scalp: 7-10 days. Arms and legs: 7-14 days. We’ll tell you exactly when to return for removal, or you can schedule a follow-up with your primary doctor. Dermabond dissolves on its own and doesn’t need removal.
What should I do before coming in for stitches?
Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage to control bleeding. Don’t remove the cloth to check. Keep pressure on for at least 10 minutes. If blood soaks through, add another cloth on top. Don’t apply ointments or creams before coming in. We need to clean the wound properly. If you’re bleeding severely, call 911 or go to the ER.
