What’s Included in a School Physical?
Our school physicals are thorough, age-appropriate, and designed to meet California school requirements. Every exam includes:
Step 1: Vital Signs
We check height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. These measurements are documented for your school’s health records and give us a baseline for your child’s overall health.
Step 2: Vision Screening
A basic vision test to identify nearsightedness, farsightedness, or other concerns that could affect your child’s ability to see the board or participate fully in school activities.
Step 3: General Physical Exam
A head-to-toe examination including heart and lung assessment, abdominal check, lymph node review, and musculoskeletal evaluation. We check for anything that might need follow-up.
Step 4: Immunization Record Review
We review your child’s immunization history to confirm they meet California school requirements. If records are incomplete, we’ll let you know what’s needed and where to get it.
Step 5: School Forms Completed
Your provider will complete and sign all required school health forms during your visit. Bring any paperwork from your school and we’ll take care of it on the spot.
School physicals aren’t just a box to check. They’re an essential requirement for enrollment in many California schools and an opportunity to catch health concerns before they affect your child’s learning. Our providers take time to review your child’s health history and answer any questions you have about their development or wellbeing.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About School Physicals
What is a school physical and why does my child need one?
A school physical (also called a well-child exam or school health assessment) is a medical examination that checks your child’s overall health and confirms they meet the requirements for school enrollment. California requires physical exams for students at several grade levels and for any child enrolling in a new school. The exam checks vital signs, vision, general health, and immunization status.
How old does my child need to be for a school physical?
We see children as young as 3 months old. For school physicals specifically, we typically see children starting around age 4 for preschool and transitional kindergarten enrollment through high school age. All ages are welcome and our providers are experienced with pediatric care at every developmental stage.
Does my child need a physical to start kindergarten in California?
Yes. California requires a health assessment (physical exam) for children entering kindergarten or first grade for the first time. Your child also needs to meet immunization requirements before starting school. Bring your child’s immunization records and any forms from the school and we’ll take care of everything during your visit.
How long does a school physical take?
Most school physicals take 20-30 minutes from check-in to completion. This includes the exam, forms completion, and any questions you have for the provider. If your child needs additional evaluation or has complex health concerns, it may take a little longer.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk-ins are welcome 7 days a week during business hours. You can also call ahead to let us know you’re coming, but appointments aren’t required. During peak back-to-school season (late July through August), calling ahead can help reduce your wait time.
How much does a school physical cost?
$50 flat fee with no office visit charge. This includes the complete physical exam, vision screening, and completion of your school’s health forms. We accept insurance, but many families find our $50 self-pay rate is equal to or less than their copay.
What immunizations does my child need for school in California?
California has specific immunization requirements by grade level. During your visit, we’ll review your child’s immunization records and let you know if anything is missing. Common required vaccines include DTaP, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tdap (required for 7th grade). If your child needs boosters or catch-up vaccines, we can discuss options or refer you to your pediatrician.
Can you complete my school's specific health forms?
Yes. Bring any forms provided by your school or district and we’ll complete them during your visit. We’re familiar with the standard forms used by Hart District, Saugus Union, Newhall, Castaic Union, and most Santa Clarita Valley schools. If your school uses a form we haven’t seen before, we can usually complete it on the spot.
Can a parent or guardian bring multiple children at the same time?
Yes. We’re happy to see siblings back-to-back during the same visit. Just let us know when you check in that you have multiple children who need physicals. This is common during back-to-school season and our team handles it efficiently.
What if my child is nervous about the exam?
That’s completely normal and we see it every day. Our providers are experienced with anxious kids and know how to explain what’s happening in age-appropriate language before they do anything. Parents are always welcome to stay with their child throughout the entire visit. We never rush a child who needs a little extra time to feel comfortable.
Does a school physical replace my child's annual wellness visit with their pediatrician?
A school physical covers the basic requirements for school enrollment but is not a substitute for comprehensive well-child care with your child’s regular pediatrician. We recommend maintaining your child’s relationship with their pediatrician for ongoing developmental monitoring and immunizations. If we identify any health concerns during your visit, we’ll let you know and recommend appropriate follow-up.
What if my child's school requires something not included in the standard physical?
Bring all forms and requirements from your school. If your school needs additional testing, specific documentation, or specialist referrals, we’ll let you know during the visit. Some schools require hearing screening or additional documentation that we can either provide or refer out for quickly. We’re happy to coordinate with school nurses directly if needed.
Is a school physical the same as a sports physical?
They’re similar but not identical. A school physical focuses on general health and enrollment requirements. A sports physical (also called a pre-participation physical or PPE) focuses more on cardiovascular health and musculoskeletal fitness for athletic participation. Some schools accept a comprehensive physical for both purposes. Ask your school or coach which exam they require, and we’ll make sure you get the right one.
