FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About UTI Treatment
What causes a UTI?
UTIs occur when bacteria (usually E. coli from the digestive tract) enter the urethra and travel to the bladder. Women are more prone to UTIs because of their shorter urethra. Common triggers include sexual activity, holding urine too long, dehydration, menopause, pregnancy, and certain birth control methods. Some people are simply more susceptible to UTIs.
How long does it take for a UTI to go away with antibiotics?
Most people start feeling better within 24-48 hours of starting antibiotics. However, you must complete the full course of antibiotics (usually 3-7 days) even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and may lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. If you’re not improving after 2-3 days, come back for reevaluation.
Can a UTI go away on its own without antibiotics?
While very mild UTIs occasionally resolve without treatment, most UTIs need antibiotics. Without treatment, the infection can spread to your kidneys (pyelonephritis), which is a serious condition requiring stronger antibiotics or even hospitalization. It’s much safer to get tested and treated early than to risk complications.
What can I do at home to feel better while taking antibiotics?
Drink plenty of water to flush bacteria from your bladder. Urinate frequently and don’t hold it. Apply a heating pad to your lower abdomen for pain relief. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods which can irritate your bladder. Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. We can also prescribe medication specifically for urinary pain relief.
Why do I keep getting UTIs?
Recurrent UTIs (3 or more per year) can be caused by incomplete bladder emptying, sexual activity, menopause, diabetes, kidney stones, or anatomical issues. We can discuss prevention strategies like post-sex urination, staying hydrated, cranberry supplements, different birth control methods, or estrogen cream for postmenopausal women. If UTIs continue, we may recommend seeing a urologist.
Can men get UTIs?
Yes, though UTIs are much less common in men because of their longer urethra. Men with UTIs often have an underlying cause like enlarged prostate, kidney stones, or diabetes. If you’re a man with UTI symptoms, it’s important to get evaluated to rule out complications. Treatment is similar to women but may require longer antibiotic courses.
Is it normal to see blood in my urine with a UTI?
Blood in urine (hematuria) can occur with UTIs due to inflammation and irritation of the bladder lining. It should clear up as the infection is treated. However, blood in urine can also indicate other problems like kidney stones or bladder issues, so we’ll evaluate this during your visit. If bleeding continues after your UTI is treated, come back for follow-up.
How can I prevent future UTIs?
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Urinate when you need to and don’t hold it. Wipe front to back after using the bathroom. Urinate before and after sexual activity. Avoid douches, feminine sprays, and scented products. Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight pants. Consider cranberry supplements. Stay hydrated and maintain good hygiene. If you get frequent UTIs, talk to us about prevention strategies.
